The moving company delivered 60 empty boxes to our apartment this week and soon afterwards, I mentally confirmed the following: 1) They forgot to send us packing tape. 2) Which I guess means I can delay packing for a few more days? 3) Yikes, this is a lot of boxes. 4) Moving may be the worst thing…ever.
As my husband and I get ready to move to Charlotte, North Carolina in just two weeks from today, I find that my to-do list is growing longer and my anxiety is at an all-time high. I constantly feel like I’m forgetting to do something. Not only is the actual act of moving tough—finding a moving company, going through every little thing you own, deciding what you don’t need to keep and what you can’t live without, packing all those things into 60 boxes, turning utilities off and on, making sure your address gets changed on everything, but then, once you reach your new home, you have to process everything all over again. But, aside from all that, what I’m really struggling with is saying goodbye to a city that I’ve come to love and a lot of really wonderful people I love who live here.
And, because I still have two weeks left, and I’m not ready to say goodbye just yet, I’m putting that off for now, like the packing, and finding a little distraction with some Friday Favorites.
Hey, it’s Friday! Let’s do this…
Pretty Heirloom Pumpkins
This year, for the first time, I’ve noticed more and more varieties of pumpkins. I like to buy a pumpkin every October, even if it’s only a tiny one. I can just imagine a fall tablescape centered around this beautiful variety of heirloom pumpkins posted on 100 Layer Cake.
Mastering That No-Makeup Makeup Look
I work from home most days. And soon, after I move, that will become every day. Since I don’t go into an office, I can usually get away with casual clothes (i.e. dressing like I might be on my way to yoga class…except I don’t do yoga) and no makeup. However, I’ve noticed that on days when I do a little something to pull myself together, I feel much better—even if it’s just to sit on a conference call or run the occasional mid-day errand. And, on these days, I’m all about low maintenance makeup like this how-to by Yahoo Beauty on “Mastering No-makeup Makeup.”
A Welcoming Entryway
Talk about a welcome home—isn’t this dreamy? I love the bold dark door in contrast with the white trim and siding. I’ve been watching A LOT of HGTV lately and my “Hello, Home” Pinterest board is packed with homey inspiration. Better Homes & Gardens included this design on a list of “20 Ways to Add Curb Appeal.”
A Hearty Salad With Fall Flavors
As the weather starts to get colder, naturally I just want to eat carbs and nap a lot. But, salads like this are a great way to keep myself from gaining the “Winter 15” (which is a little like the “Freshman 15” in college, only you’re not in college and it involves a lot less beer and Kraft Easy Mac, but a lot more PSLs and pie). Blue Door Farmstand, a cute, farm-to-table lunch spot, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, makes a salad just like this—which I love. The only difference is the version from Blue Door has bacon in it. Which I think, we can all agree, would be a great addition to this recipe for Kale and Brussels Sprouts Salad with Tahini-Maple Dressing from Cookie & Katie. Oooh, maybe even throw some apple slices in there for a sweet crunch? Boom!
This Colorful Print by Bouffants and Broken Hearts
A bold pink lip and pizza…what’s not to love? This print by Bouffants and Broken Hearts, featured on Design Love Fest, would be a bright and fun addition to the gallery wall of my dreams.
My New Skincare BAE
After recommendations from my best girlfriends, I finally invested in a Clarisonic cleansing brush and the Sonic Radience Skin Brightening system. I’m less than a week in and I’m already hooked and seeing positive changes with my skin. It’s not cheap, but now that I’m 30, taking care of my skin the best way possible is a top priority. Right now, this set is on sale at Sephora.
I’d Like My Breakfast in the Nook, Please.
If you’re into looking at pictures of beautiful spaces, you should follow Studio McGee on Instagram. If there was a way for me to just move into the Studio McGee website, I would. This farmhouse-style breakfast nook (complete with bold, gingham pillows) would be the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee. And, don’t even get me started on those shiplap walls. Swoon.
The Serial Updates That Have Me Saying, “Hmmmm…”
Do you still miss the Serial podcast too? Good news, from what I read, season 2 should be out before the end of the year. If you haven’t listened to the first season yet, do it. About a year ago, my husband and I flew through the podcast while making the long drive to New Jersey for the holidays. After that, I was pretty hooked. (If you want to swap and share theories, I’m down. Seriously, email me.) This week, there have been a few, Serial-related updates. First, there are rumors of a Serial TV show. There aren’t many details yet, but the rights have been optioned with FOX. And second, there have been some interesting updates with regard to Don, Hae’s boyfriend at the time of her murder, and his alibi. I don’t want to be responsible for a spoiler, so if you’re interested, you can read more about it in this update on The Frisky.
This Look: Leather + Stripes
When it comes to fall fashion, It’s easy to get wrapped up in sweaters and plaid, but I’m loving this edgier look, posted on Her Imajination—stripes, leather moto jacket, the sunglasses, gold jewelry and a pink lip.
Wise Words from Amy Poehler’s Book, “Yes Please”
I’m just going to leave this here. I came across this quote from Amy Poehler’s book, “Yes Please,” on Ashley Brooke Beauty & Style and now I not only need to read the book, but I also want Poehler to join my new squad: Amy, Amy & Devon. (The other Amy is Schumer. Obvi. And don’t worry, you can join our squad too…if your name is Amy or Devon. Or pizza.)
A Kitchen That (Just Might) Make Me Want to Cook
When I watch any show on HGTV, I usually notice that the first thing families and couples mention they’re looking for in a home, is an open floor plan with a big kitchen. But, this kitchen designed by Jean Randazzo, proves that smaller, galley kitchens can be just appealing. I love the white cabinets—they make this space clean and bright.
Last Sunday’s Brunch at Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits
If I made a list of my top 5 favorite foods, biscuits would be high on that list—I’m talking maybe number 2 or 3, no joke. Egg and cheese on a biscuit, biscuits and gravy, or just a buttermilk biscuit with butter and honey, they all make my mouth water. Last Sunday, my husband and I had brunch at Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits in Logan Square. I kept it simple with a biscuit and a side of candied bacon and Mike went with the bacon biscuit sandwich, topped with collard greens, bacon and an egg. Then, because I’m never opposed to breakfast dessert, we shared a slice of the chocolate chess pie. And, although I love biscuits, the pie was definitely the highlight of the meal.
See you next Friday! xx, Devon
