Can you even believe it’s September already? I knew it was going to happen, because it always does, but summer just flew by. It never fails, every spring I make a list of things I want to do when summer rolls around—go to the beach is usually #1. (I’m big on lists.) And, yet, here we are, another summer gone and I never did make it to the beach. Not even the beach at Lake Michigan which is literally less than a mile away from my apartment. That being said…Hello September! This is my absolute favorite month of the year.
Top 5 Reasons Why I Love September
- Our Anniversary. My husband and I were married on September 8th—next week we’ll celebrate our 3rd anniversary. (It’s two days before my dad’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Dad!)
- Football Season Starts. While I don’t necessarily love the endless hours of football that I’ll soon be forced to watch, I do love a few things that come along with it, like football snacks and tailgating.
- Cooler Temps. Because sweating and frizzy hair ain’t cute.
- Fall Clothing. Booties, dark colors, lot of layers that hide “things” (i.e. carbs) and sweatshirts (those hide carbs too).
- Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING. Yeah, ok, I’m basic.
And, since my favorite month has begun, let’s stick with the theme—here are some Friday Favorites:
Smart Jewelry from Ringly
File this under “Things I don’t need, but I really want. But, I can probably convince myself I need.” Ringly is a line of smart jewelry that alerts you to incoming calls, texts, emails or social media notifications without having your phone in hand. Based on preferences set in the app, you let Ringly know what to notify you about (ooooh, like new posts from Hello Friday, bzzzzzz). Christina Mercando, CEO and Founder of Ringly, spoke on a panel at Create & Cultivate, the creative conference I recently attended. I think the idea of “dark” hours is great—time designated during the day when you disconnect from computers, phones, iPads, etc. But, truth be told, we live in a really connected world and sometimes that’s harder said than done. Ringly provides a way to keep you semi-connected without being glued to your phone—especially when you’re spending time with loved ones, enjoying a meal with friends, or watching Bachelor in Paradise. Because let’s be honest, you can’t miss a second of that crazy!
Neutrals for Fall
Black is my favorite color. However, right now, I’m really loving neutrals and I think they’ll seamlessly transition into fall. That warm, camel color?! Love. I see it everywhere lately too. Lulus.com got it right with this look.
Hosting a Farm to Table Dinner Party
I can totally picture this dinner party: after a morning of wandering the farmer’s market for the freshest ingredients, pressed juice in-hand, you put together a dinner party menu full of locally-grown fare and dress your table with lush, seasonal flowers and greens. Style Me Pretty put together this guide for doing just that—if only I had a dining room table. Or, a dining room.
Emi Jay Hair Ties, in Every Color & Pattern
I always have a hair tie on my wrist. The window of time when I have my hair down before I get the urge to put it up, is very narrow. I love the fun patterns and colors of Emi Jay hair ties. Plus, if you’re going to keep it around your wrist, it’s a better look than a typical hair elastic and I think they’re more gentle on hair too.
Good Vibes Only
Lately, I’ve tried to start new morning and nighttime routines. Rather than starting and ending the day on my phone, looking at Instagram or Facebook feeds, I’ve been spending this time reflecting or setting my intentions for the day ahead. I love this quote, found on Pinterest: “It’s a Good Day to Have a Good Day.” I like the idea that each day is a fresh start and depending on our attitude and outlook we can choose to make it a good one!
Confession: My husband does most of our cooking. It’s not that I can’t cook…I just don’t really love to. I totally hit the jackpot though, and I know it—my husband is a wonderful cook. A few weeks ago, he made this pasta dish found on Foodie Crush—it was so good that we’ve added it to our monthly rotation. It’s a nice change of pace from a typical, red sauce pasta dish and has all the elements of a great Italian meal.
A How-to on Wearing Ankle Boots
This is the year! I can just feel it! The year I find the perfect ankle boots. And in the spirit of finding those perfect boots—Babble posted a guide on 10 Ways To Wear Ankle Boots (And 13 Tips To Wearing Them Well).
This Carrot Cake from The Faux Martha
Is your mouth watering? Put cream cheese frosting on just about anything and I’ll probably eat it. This Carrot Cake from The Faux Martha looks absolutely perfect—-no raisins or nuts! Right?
Meaningful Accessories from The Giving Keys
This is my favorite Friday Favorite this week. I came across The Giving Keys necklaces while shopping at Nordstrom. These necklaces are actual keys with words like, Fearless, Create, Strength, Dream and Brave printed on them. The idea of the jewelry? When you wear it, you embrace the word printed on the key. Then, pay it forward by giving the necklace to someone else that needs the message more than you. Don’t you love that? Also, The Giving Keys works to employ those who have been affected by homelessness. These pictures are from the company’s Instagram account—go follow them!
This List of Best Drugstore Products for Fall
I can do some serious damage at Sephora. Which means serious damage on my credit card statement. Refinery29 was very kind and put together a list of “The Best Drugstore Products for Fall, From Hollywood’s Top Makeup Artists.” I especially like this e.l.f. Studio Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder. Now, can we please talk about contouring…
Beauty Beginners: Contouring
Does contouring confuse the hell out of anyone else? Let’s be honest it looks absolutely crazy. And really, unless you’re Kim K and have a glam squad, I just don’t think it’s practical for everyday. However, I’d like to master at least the basics of contouring for those special occasions when I have a little extra time to put my face on. Lauren Conrad put together this beginner’s guide on the basics of contouring. Thanks, LC!
I almost wish I never knew about this flatbread from Trader Joe’s. Almost. It’s so good, y’all. I could probably eat a whole one by myself, but my husband and I split one and that made me feel much better about my life.
Despite all the craziness and stress that inevitably came along with wedding planning, the day itself flew by. It’s a blur. But, the things that stick with you, are the feelings. The nervous excitement leading up to the moment you see each other for the first time that day; the conviction and the commitment you feel when you recite your vows; the overwhelming support and love you receive when everyone you care about is in one place celebrating the beginning of your married life. Those feelings are what I’ll always remember.
Mike, you’re my very best friend. You’ve seen me through every up and every down for the past 7 years. And through it all you have given me unconditional love, support and constant encouragement. You’re the true definition of a partner. We make a great team—we both accept that marriage takes work and although it’s not always easy, it’s always worth it. I’m so thankful that I get to spend my life with you. Happy 3 Years. All my love.
Alright, friends. Get out there and spread the love! It’s Friday! Enjoy the holiday weekend and feel free to leave a comment sharing some of your favorites too.
See you next Friday! xx, Devon
